Candy Chang: Before I die I want to…

If I were walking down the street and came across a “Before i die …” wall, I hope I would write something honest and revealing about myself even if it scared me.   While I couldBefore I Die I Want To... write important wants, like visiting the Arctic Circle or creating my own foundation for the betterment of women and girls, those would be true, but not scarily revealing.

What’s great about this project though, is how everyone gets to answer and every answer is exactly right for that person.  Revealing or safe, the act of writing connects everyone on the wall.   I like knowing some of the strangers walking down the street and some of my neighbors living next to me have the same hopes, fears, dreams and ideas as I do.

Before today is over … I will think about what I would chalk on to the board.

From TED: In her New Orleans neighborhood, artist and TED Fellow Candy Chang turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking a fill-in-the-blank question: “Before I die I want to ___.” Her neighbors’ answers — surprising, poignant, funny — became an unexpected mirror for the community. (What’s your answer?)

    • I enjoyed some of your pieces. Keep up the writing. I am in a place where I need to craft self-descriptors right now. Hadn’t thought of it as a positive defense, too, until I read your blog post. Thanks!
