It is 8:41 pm and I am closing out the celebration of my 50 + 1 birthday month. I slept in and drank coffee in bed with puppies tucked close beside me. I read a murder mystery on my iPad and killed some Zombies in PVZ2.
Mike took me and my dear cousin Kendra out for breakfast and then it was home to water our garden and take a nap. Not a bad birthday.
I like being 50+. There’s a lot more forgiveness for being cantankerous and opinionated. Young people role their eyes and old people smirk “She’s not seen nothing yet.” I love this age when I appear to have absolute carte blanche to shape the future however I want it to be.
My Facebook page has filled with birthday wishes and the USPS truck has brought packages and cards from my bio-Aunts and friends around the country. I am truly thankful for those who love me. I am truly thankful for the love and friendships these 50+1 years have yielded.
I cannot think, tonight, about the black hours and the long nights of fear and sadness that have filled some of my nights. I can think only of the coming through, of the victories over despair and loneliness we all feel at some points in our life. I can think only of the days in front of me and the horizon far beyond where my eye can see.
I am hopeful tonight.
Yes the world is on the brink of another war, and violence, hatred and bitterness, hubris and payback, seem to be the watch words of our elected officials.
But I am hopeful.
A lifelong friend celebrated the wedding of his son today. I know people who take their vacations in Haiti to bring medicine and water to the victims still living in abject poverty and horrific conditions. I know people who give their last dime to care for those less fortunate. I know people who set aside their own wants to care for their aged parents and I know people who give back despite the fear and pain they still feel. We live in a country where dissension is a cause for celebration; where dissension is a sign of trust and not of fear.
There is much to be hopeful about.
I am thankful for my 50 plus one and hope there is another 50 plus one to come.
